The Musical Theater Camp Keeps Band Kids Busy All Summer

By Pamela Allen

Parents are certainly put under a great deal of pressure where their kids are concerned, and they often pass that feeling on down the line. In order to push them in what they feel is the proper direction in life, it is often necessary to deliver them to educational opportunities that will be an investment in their future. Musical Theater Camp is just such a place where kids can get a great start in life.

These camps are a starting ground for young people who feel drawn to explore the more creative side of their nature. They may want to learn a new talent, or continue to receive a detailed instruction on how to fully master an instrument that they had started picking on during their last summer visit. A musician never ceases to be a student.

In the 50s and 60s young people bemoaned these camps and felt abandoned by their parents, many of whom would take vacations out of the country while their kids were gone. However, it turned out that these kids benefited a great deal by being artsy campers every summer. As those students were approaching adulthood, they found themselves availed to opportunities in Hollywood that they had not anticipated.

These camps embrace an attitude that all students have hidden talents which they work to bring to the surface in their lives. Fear is the primary force which prevents most people from stepping up to embrace a role of authority, or perform in front of their peers. A little encouragement and confidence building goes a long way to bring these kids out of their shell.

These children are often fortunate enough to receive instruction from famous musicians that we all listen to every day. In fact, these celebrities take a strong interest in the future of these kids, and the music industry as a whole. One might even wonder how the kids get over being star-struck enough to actually learn anything.

It is not at all uncommon for students to choose a different primary topic upon which to focus their attention each summer. Some of them might choose to pursue a very well-rounded set of skills by mastering certain instruments and also learning to get into the mind of a character they will be performing in the summer-end play. Most of these camps even have teachers for various forms of dance, mime, and clowning.

Many parents consider it to be cruel to push their children the way these parents do, and there is a good chance that they are correct about that. However, the kids themselves often feel they have the time of their lives every summer, and would not trade it for anything. These kids will have the chance to attend colleges that specialize in the arts.

Years ago the campers would get sick of endless musical drills, singing drills, and other monotonous activities. Now they belt out the tunes of their favorite rock stars, learn to write a play, or have the opportunity to master a rare instrument no one has ever heard of. These kids really do not think they are being mistreated, but rather are gifted with open doors for the future.
