ESP Alive And Well At NYC Mentalism Shows

By Henry Green

The art of Extra Sensory Perception is a rather ancient one. For, mentalists are performing artists with what appear to be special powers. In most cases, these are individuals whom have a keen sense of awareness and strong intuitive powers such as those now performing in NYC Mentalism Shows.

These types of shows can often include rapid mathematics, deduction, memory feats, mind control, mediumship, psychokinesis, precognition, divination, clairvoyance, telepathy and hypnosis. While some of these entertainers are considered psychic performers, there are also non-mentalists such as bizzarists and psychic readers whom reside outside this category. For, bizzarists often perform at carnivals and appear on reality shows while psychic readers can often be found reading cards, palms, runes and tea leaves at faires and festivals around the globe.

The majority of performances which mentalists provide can be traced back to the 19th century and tests conducted by individuals whom were believed to have supernatural powers such as mediums and spiritualists. Whereas, the history of the practice dates back to the days of Moses and the Old Testament. For, there are scholars whom have suggested that Old Testament scriptures relate to mentalism as being part and parcel to various prophecies.

Among professional magicians, the mentalists are generally considered one of the earliest to perform with the earliest performance being provided by Girolamo Scotto, a sleight-of-hand magician in 1572. While some suggest that mentalism can be learned, others attribute the skills to psychic or supernatural powers. In either case, these individuals have astounded and entertained audiences for centuries.

Derren Brown and other more contemporary performers often attribute these skills to natural abilities such as being able to read body language or use psychological suggestion and misdirection to create subliminal control. For contemporaries whom perform live in city squares and streets, audiences often become a part of the act. For, Derren Brown and others tend to make audiences aware that everything in the act is an illusion.

While some magicians have no problem lying to an audience to create a belief that some types of magic are real, others believe it morally wrong to lie. At the same time, there is a thin line between lying and not revealing how a trick is a trick and not real magic. Whereas, there are others whom may provide half truths about how a trick is performed but leave out other details.

Most mentalists shy away from using traditional magic tricks during a performance. For, doing so would associate mentalists with the theatrical trickery often performed by stage magicians and illusionists. In fact, a number of mentalists do not use the title magician at all. For, there are some whom insist that the art of mentalism is altogether a different art form.

Ultimately, mentalists argue that the act of mentalism invokes a belief which when presented appropriately to the right audience is offered as reality. In most cases, those making these arguments and claims are mentalists who are endowed with psychic abilities which the performer uses to play on a spectator's sense of perception. Whereas, different types of magicians perform traditional magical acts which are known to be nothing more than illusions.
