How To Start Working In Voiceover Services

By George Wood

Actors perform in a wide range of venues including in film, on stage, on television, as amusement park characters and event guests, just to name a few. Some are even able to make a good living acting utilizing only their vocal talents. Voiceover services are utilized in a lot of different ways though the average person rarely realizes it.

These artists use the power of their voices to breathe life into characters or stories. They are used for such purposes as cartoons and animated films; advertisements for television, movie trailers, radio, and internet; even video games and loudspeaker announcements. There are endless possibilities for how the talents of this type of actors might be utilized.

While this field is widely used and in high demand, getting started and noticed can take quite a bit of work for those interested in becoming a voice artist. Performing in this way involve much more than simply speaking or singing into a microphone. One must be able to do everything a physical actor would do without the benefit of visual aid to help the audience connect.

When deciding to get started in the field of voice work, the first thing one might consider doing is taking vocal lessons with a qualified instructor. Most might think their voice is fine as it is but knowing how to control one's breathing, tone, and pitch, can be quite useful when needing to speak long dialog with specific demands. Coaching is also a very effective way to learn other tricks of the trade.

There are times when vocal artists will have specific requirements for a job. This might mean something like using certain accents to portray one or more characters, creating a voice especially for a role, or emoting effectively enough to sell the scene. Improving skills in these essential areas are just some of the benefits reaped from proper coaching.

After some training, the next step would be to go to a studio and have a professional demo tape made. These are left at every audition and mailed to advertising and casting companies in introduction packages, throughout their target region. Agents will utilize these to help decide who to cast for a role or to call back.

The field has some rather stiff competition so serious actors need to diligently submit their intro packets, continue training to improve vital skills, and update their dossier frequently. Calling agencies that received demo tracts to make sure they are still being actively considered and touch base, is highly recommended. Two desirable advantages are the ability to adapt to the preferences of modern society and flexibility.

Working in the industry as a vocal artist can be very versatile and a lot of fun, but it does take more than a great voice. Continued training and coaching are necessary for keeping talents sharp and always improving. Some things that all aspiring actors of this sort need to keep in mind is to be diligent, never give up, and make sure to follow up on submissions.
