An Introduction To Pulp Painting Artwork

By George Johnson

In painting, prior preparation is necessary. Pulp painting also needs a lot of careful preparation. This is especially needed in the making of the pulp. Once the pulp is done properly, one is assured of a good result of the painting.

It is a type of art that uses the pulp to create a colored painting. The pulp is applied on a safe carefully to create a colorful painting. There are different materials that can be used to create pulp such as reeds, grass, bamboo and even cotton fiber.

The choice of the plant fiber is an important step. The fiber is then mixed with water and beaten or blended until the fibers are well mixed to produce a fine mixture. The technique used to mix can produce different texture with one type of fiber.

Bamboo is the most preferred pulp ingredient. It is usually available in most areas, absorbs well and is very easy to control. Once you mix the fiber well, you will then need to color it.

Each fiber tends to absorb color differently just as with textiles. The same red pigment will look different in the different fibers just as it would in different textiles. The varying texture and surface texture of each fiber also tend to produce a different color result.

A lot of attention is needed when mixing the pulp with the colors. Especially with the different tones of the same color. You can easily lose the color you want to have if you do not mix it properly. You should also avoid putting different types of colored pulps together.

In this art painting, colors can be easily added. The whole idea of the painting is to create illusions with color. When the painting is viewed at close range, it is easy to notice the fibers used and the color separately. But when viewed at a distance, the painting gives a different illusion.

It is important to have a sketch of the painting you want to create even before you get started. The painting technique used may be confusing if you do not have a sketch to guide you. This is mainly because unlike in other artworks where you start with the background moving forward, this one requires you to start with the front and move backward.

This kind of artwork requires special experience. Unlike regular painting where one starts with painting the background, this one requires you start with the front and work towards painting the background.

You start with painting the foreground and move towards painting the background. The idea behind this is to avoid messing the different layers of pulp you will have created earlier. This allows you to have some control over the outcome of the final painting result.

As you continue painting, ensure the pulp remains wet. To give an appearance of depth, several tones of one color are used. Each layer needs to be applied carefully to avoid messing the previous layer.

The background may need to be strengthened after you are done with the painting. You can use a board which can be stuck in the background and use silicon to stick it. The drying process can also be quickened by using a vacuum pump which sucks the water from the painting.

The board can later be removed when the painting is completely dry. The drying period can be weeks depending on the size of the painting. You will end up with a paper thin painting once you remove the board.
