Buying A Moonshine Still Intrigues Many Home Brewers

By Donna Bell

There are some people who love coffee. Others like trying different kinds of teas. Still others enjoy the taste of an occasional alcoholic beverage. If you are of legal age, you can purchase wines and beers in many different varieties and in a full range of prices. Over the past several years, more and more individuals have become intrigued with making their own personal beers and wines. Then there are those who love the idea of making whiskey in a moonshine still.

Moonshine, hooch, shine, or white lightning has been around for a long time. Most people associate it with the backwoods of the rural south. Actually, it came to prominence during the Prohibition era when all manufacture and distribution of liquor was outlawed in the United States. Enterprising individuals went into the bootlegging business and became rich providing illegal alcohol to people willing to risk arrest over it.

Today owning stills is becoming more and more popular with the public. They are legal to own and easy to find on the internet. Companies sell new and used ones, and there are plenty of websites that offer kits and plans for those interested in building a still from scratch. New and restored stills are moderately priced, some less than five hundred dollars. You can even bid on them online.

Not everyone interested in purchasing a still is interested in making liquor. When you see well made stills, they can be quite beautiful, and some have even been elevated to the level of art. You can find antique equipment to add to your home and delight your guests with your creativity.

Individuals interested in producing moonshine usually do some research, end up knowing something about the liquor, and try to impress their drinking buddies with interesting facts. They may explain that it became popular with rural Americans because it was cheap and easy to make. Most of the ingredients needed they already had on the farm, like corn and hog feed mash. It was also potent, about one hundred sixty proof when ready to drink.

There is a NASCAR connection. Moonshiners often built cars specially fitted to be able to outrun a suspicious sheriff. Eventually someone decided it would be fun to race these vehicles on a track, and that was the beginning of stock car racing. There is also a connection with popular soft drinks that routinely sponsor drivers.

The big question, when it comes to moonshine is, is it legal? The quick answer is, that in most states, it is illegal to make it at home. In some states, you can manufacture the liquor as long as you have all the licenses needed and pay the taxes required. Home brewed wine and beer is legal however, in most states. If you are caught making "hooch", you can face fines and felony charges.

The stills are interesting objects whether you are making whiskey in them or using them for decoration. They have a fascinating history and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.
